Guy Fawkes Night, also known as Bonfire Night, commemorates the failed Gunpowder Plot of 1605, when a group of Catholic conspirators, led by Robert Catesby, attempted to blow up the Houses of Parliament and assassinate King James I. The plot was thwarted when authorities discovered Guy Fawkes guarding the explosives in the cellar beneath the Parliament. Ever since, the 5th of November has been celebrated with bonfires, fireworks, and the burning of an effigy, symbolizing Guy Fawkes.
