Decorated tram in Tokyo, Japan - Anglo-Japanese Alliance
A decorated tram in Tokyo - part of the celebrations following the signing of the Anglo-Japanese Alliance of 1902 and to welcome the arrival of the British Naval contingent to the city. The Alliance was to run for five years before being renewed, was primarily directed against the potential shared menace posed, it was believed, by France and (most probably) Russia in the Far East. The alliance obligated either power to remain neutral if one or other found itself at war. However, should either power be obliged to fight a war against two or more powers, the other signatory was obliged to provide military aid. Date: 1902

EDITORS COMMENTS
A captivating image of a decorated tram making its way through the bustling streets of Tokyo in 1902, marking the celebrations following the signing of the Anglo-Japanese Alliance. The tram, adorned with an extravagant display of flags, floral garlands, and decorations, reflects the jubilant mood of the Japanese people as they welcomed the arrival of the British Naval contingent to their city. The Anglo-Japanese Alliance, signed on August 30, 1902, was a pact between Britain and Japan that was intended to last for five years, with the possibility of renewal. The primary objective of this alliance was to counteract the perceived threat from France and, most likely, Russia in the Far East. The agreement obligated both parties to remain neutral if one found itself at war with another power. However, if either power was obliged to fight a war against two or more powers, the other signatory was obliged to provide military aid. This historic moment was a significant turning point in the relationship between Britain and Japan, as it marked the beginning of a formal alliance between the two nations. The tram, with its vibrant decorations, serves as a visual representation of the unity and camaraderie that was being celebrated in Tokyo during this time. The arrival of the British Naval contingent was a grand affair, with the streets of Tokyo filled with people eager to catch a glimpse of the British ships and sailors. The decorations on the tram were a testament to the excitement and anticipation that surrounded this event, and the image captures a moment in history that continues to resonate with us today. Overall, this photograph is a fascinating glimpse into the past, offering a unique perspective on the celebrations that marked the signing of the Anglo-Japanese Alliance in 1902. The decorated tram, with its flags, floral garlands, and decorations, stands as a symbol of the friendship and cooperation that existed between Britain and Japan during this time.
