EDITORS COMMENTS
In the ancient Indian mythology of the Mahabharata, the captivating beauty of Princess Damayanti (6th century BCE) was renowned throughout the world. Reputedly, she was the most beautiful woman who had ever lived. One day, while she was bathing in the lake, she was approached by King Nala in disguise, who had been enchanted by her radiant charm. Unaware of his true identity, Damayanti agreed to marry him on the condition that he prove himself worthy of her hand. King Nala, however, was soon discovered by Damayanti's father, who was enraged by the deception. To save himself, Nala was banished from the kingdom. In return for not being caught, the king was granted a boon by the sage Durvasas. He asked for the help of the celestial swan, Jatayu, who sang the praises of King Nala to Damayanti, extolling his virtues and valor. This enchanting image depicts the moment when Damayanti, mesmerized by the swan's melodious voice, listens intently to the praises of her true love, King Nala. The swan, in the form of a graceful and elegant bird, glides through the tranquil waters of the lake, its wings spread wide, as it sings the king's praises. The serene and idyllic setting of the scene is a testament to the power of love and the lengths to which it can go to unite two souls. This historical print, from the vast collection of Mary Evans Picture Library, offers a glimpse into the rich and fascinating world of Indian mythology, where beauty, love, and magic come together in a timeless tale of romance and devotion.
