Amidst the chaos and fury of the 12th century Crusades, knights from various European realms clashed swords in a fierce melee. The air was thick with the acrid smell of gunpowder and the cacophony of clashing steel. The sun cast long shadows over the battlefield, illuminating the determined faces of the combatants as they fought for dominance and survival. The Crusades, a series of religious and military campaigns sanctioned by the Roman Catholic Church, began in the late 11th century and lasted for over two centuries. This particular battle, circa 1190, saw the clash of the armies of the Third Crusade, led by the likes of King Richard the Lionheart of England and Philip II of France, against the forces of Saladin, the Sultan of Egypt and Syria. The melee was the thick of the battle, a chaotic and brutal hand-to-hand encounter where the outcome could hinge on the strength, skill, and determination of each individual knight.
