Creating model for flight simulator, RAF Lyneham, Wiltshire

Man working on a model for a flight simulator for use at RAF Lyneham, Wiltshire. Before computers, flight simulators used actual models of different airfields in order to train pilots. The model being created here was of the RAF base on Gan Island in the Indian Ocean. A colour TV camera relayed a picture of the scale model to a screen in the mock up of a Hercules Transport aircraft. Detail on the model was so precise that final work had to be carried out under a magnifying lens. Date: circa 1976
