The mills, operated by the Cox Brothers, were renowned for their production of high-quality gelatine, a crucial ingredient in photography, medicine, and food industries during this era. The photograph presents a panoramic view of the mill complex, with its red-brick buildings, tall chimneys, and intricate machinery. Steam engines and boilers release plumes of smoke into the sky, signaling the mill's continuous operation. Workers can be seen in the foreground, clad in protective clothing, as they load raw materials into the mill. The tranquil Water of Leith river flows gently through the scene, providing the necessary waterpower for the mill's machinery. The riverbank is dotted with trees and greenery, offering a stark contrast to the industrial setting. The showcard's intricate details and vibrant colors bring the Gorgie Mills to life, allowing us to imagine the sights, sounds, and smells of this bustling industrial hub.
