EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking print captures the pivotal moment in history when Robert Clive, a British entrepreneur and military leader, directed the attack on the fortified town of Conjeveram in South India during the Anglo-Mysore Wars in 1751. Clive, dressed in military attire and waving a sword, stands atop a hill overlooking the town, strategically planning the assault with his infantry troops below. The print, created in the 19th century, offers a glimpse into the intense and decisive battle that took place on March 15, 1751. The Second Anglo-Mysore War, of which this attack was a part, was a significant turning point in the British East India Company's expansion in India. Clive's victory at Conjeveram allowed the Company to secure control over parts of the Carnatic region and further solidified their presence in the subcontinent. The eventual outcome of the war led to the Treaty of Madras, which recognized the Company's dominion over territories previously ruled by the Nawab of the Carnatic. This print serves as a testament to the strategic brilliance and military prowess of Robert Clive, who played a crucial role in shaping the political landscape of South India during the 18th century. The image also highlights the intense and often violent nature of colonial expansion and the complex power dynamics that existed between European powers and native rulers in the region.
