EDITORS COMMENTS
Charles V, known as Charles the Wise or Charles the Sage (1337-1380), was the eldest son of Jean II, King of France. Born during a time of great turmoil in European history, the Hundred Years War between France and England had been raging since 1337. The French monarchy had suffered significant losses during this conflict, including the loss of territories to the English. Charles V ascended to the throne in 1364, at the age of 21, and set out to reverse the tide of war. With a keen intellect and a strong will, he proved to be a capable and determined leader. He allied himself with the Duke of Burgundy and the Count of Flanders, forming a formidable coalition against the English. Under Charles V's command, the French forces were able to recapture many of the territories that had been lost during the previous decades. In 1375, they retook the city of Reims, which had been in English hands since 1420. The following year, they recaptured the strategically important city of Rouen, which had been the capital of the English in Normandy since 1419. Charles V's military successes helped to restore French pride and strengthen the monarchy. He was also known for his wisdom and his efforts to promote peace and stability within his realm. He established the Court of the Parlement of Paris, which became a major institution of French justice, and he worked to improve the administration of the kingdom. This photograph, taken from Mary Evans Prints Online, depicts Charles V in regal attire, seated on a throne, with a serious expression on his face. He is shown holding a scepter in one hand and a orb in the other, symbols of his royal power. The image captures the dignity and strength of this remarkable king, who helped to restore France's fortunes during a time of great upheaval.
