EDITORS COMMENTS
This delightful caricature captures the camaraderie and mutual assistance between two prominent Victorian actor-managers, Henry Irving and John Lawrence Toole, during the 1880s. Henry Irving (1838-1905), depicted on the left, was a renowned English actor and theatre manager, known for his exceptional talent and innovative productions at the Lyceum Theatre in London. On the right, we see John Lawrence Toole (1830-1906), another distinguished actor and manager, who was a close friend and collaborator of Irving. The image, titled "You scratch my back and I'll scratch yours. (Don't overdo it, Johnny!)", suggests a playful exchange between the two men, hinting at their supportive and collaborative relationship. The caricature, created in 1881, captures the essence of the theatrical world during this period, where actors and managers worked together, often forming partnerships to ensure the success of their productions. Irving and Toole's collaboration began in 1878 when Toole joined Irving as a leading actor at the Lyceum Theatre. Their successful partnership continued until Toole's retirement in 1891. The caricature serves as a reminder of the important role of friendship and collaboration in the world of Victorian theatre.
