This poignant photograph captures the moment of surrender at the Dardanelles campaign during the First World War. The image, dated between 1915 and 1916, depicts a group of weary and wounded British soldiers, having been taken as prisoners of war by the Turkish forces. The campaign, also known as the Gallipoli Campaign, was a major military operation mounted by the Allies to secure a sea route to Russia and prevent the Central Powers from gaining control of the Turkish Straits.
