This evocative photograph captures a moment of triumph and relief in the heart of Africa during the First World War. Taken circa early March 1916, soon after the German surrender of Gama, Cameroon on 28 February 1916, the image shows four British soldiers standing proudly before a backdrop of African savannah. At the center, General Cunliffe, the commander of the British forces in Cameroon, wears the distinctive peaked helmet and pith helmet combination that was typical of British officers serving in the tropics. To his right, Major Wright and Lieutenant Cook, both clad in full military uniform, exchange a conversation. The identity of the soldier on the left, Lieutenant Colonel Briscet, is less certain, but his confident posture and smartly pressed uniform attest to his rank and military prowess.
