EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph is taken from The British Legion Album, a poignant collection of images compiled by E. Lonsdale Deighton in support of Field Marshal Earl Haig's Appeal for ex-Servicemen of all ranks during the aftermath of the First World War. The image captures the spirit of camaraderie and resilience among soldiers as they gather together, their uniforms bearing the scars of battle. Field Marshal Douglas Haig, the British Army's Commander-in-Chief during the war, established the appeal in 1919 to provide financial assistance to the thousands of ex-servicemen who were struggling to readjust to civilian life. Haig, who is depicted in the photograph, was deeply affected by the plight of those who had served under his command and felt a strong sense of responsibility towards their welfare. The British Legion Album was published to raise awareness and funds for the appeal. It contained over 100 photographs, each accompanied by a brief caption, and was distributed to schools, churches, and other community organizations across the country. The images depicted the daily lives of ex-servicemen, their families, and their communities, highlighting the challenges they faced in the aftermath of the war. This photograph is a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by the brave men and women who served in the First World War and the ongoing support needed to help them rebuild their lives. The British Legion, which was founded in 1921 from the amalgamation of several ex-servicemen's organizations, continues to provide vital support to the Armed Forces community today.
