EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the majesty and power of two Orion-class battleships, HMS Orion of the Royal Navy and USS New Mexico of the United States Navy, at sea during the First World War. Dating from the period between 1914 and 1918, these super-dreadnoughts represented the pinnacle of naval warfare technology at the time. The Orion-class battleships were the second generation of dreadnoughts, larger and more heavily armed than their predecessors. HMS Orion, commissioned in 1913, was the first British battleship to carry a full complement of twelve 15-inch guns, while USS New Mexico, launched in 1916, was the first American battleship to carry a full complement of twelve 14-inch guns. Both ships displaced over 25,000 tons and were over 600 feet long. The image shows the two battleships underway, their massive hulls cutting through the waves, surrounded by a sea of white foam. The Orion-class battleships were designed to project power and intimidate the enemy, and in this photograph, they certainly do that in spades. The ships' funnels belch out thick plumes of smoke, while their masts and rigging tower above the waterline. The First World War was a time of great upheaval and change, and the battleship was the symbol of the power and might of the naval forces of the major European and American powers. The Orion-class battleships were at the forefront of this arms race, and this photograph is a testament to their enduring legacy as symbols of naval power and war time dominance.
