This image depicts the legendary moment from Virgil's epic poem, The Aeneid, when Turnus, a Rutulian prince, orders the burning of Aeneas' boats in an attempt to prevent the Trojan hero from continuing his journey to Italy. However, these were no ordinary boats. They were made from sacred wood, consecrated to the Mother Goddess Cybele, the Anatolian deity of fertility, motherhood, and nature. As the flames engulfed the boats, Cybele, enraged by this desecration of her sacred wood, intervened. In a remarkable display of divine intervention, she transformed the burning boats into enchanting sea-nymphs. These ethereal beings, with their graceful forms and aquatic features, emerged from the waves, adding a mystical element to the scene.
