In this photograph from Mary Evans Prints Online, we witness Louis Blériot's iconic monoplane, the Bleriot XI, taking flight for the first time in front of a crowd of onlookers. The Bleriot XI, also known as the Bleriot XII, was a significant advancement in aviation technology, featuring a monocoque fuselage, a single-wing design, and a pusher propeller. Louis Blériot, a pioneering French aviator, designed and built the Bleriot XI in response to the Aéro-Club de France's challenge to build a lightweight aircraft that could fly a circular course of 60 meters in diameter, take off and land within 30 meters, and carry a passenger for 10 kilometers. Blériot successfully met these requirements, and on October 25, 1909, he took off from Reims-Précy airfield, marking the first time an aircraft had flown a circular course in a public demonstration.
