EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking image captures the moment of arrest for Jean-Baptiste Bernadotte, Duke of Reichstadt and former Napoleonic general, following the collapse of his conspiracy in October 1822. Born in France, Bernadotte rose to prominence under Napoleon Bonaparte, serving as Marshal of the Empire and later becoming the Crown Prince of Sweden in 1810. However, his loyalty to Napoleon waned, and in 1812, he defected to the Allied forces during the Russian campaign. Despite his defection, Bernadotte's past connections to Napoleon's regime made him a suspect in various plots to restore the fallen emperor. In October 1822, a conspiracy was uncovered, alleging that Bernadotte was planning to assassinate King Charles XIV of Sweden and reinstate Napoleon. The evidence against him was circumstantial, but the political climate was volatile, and Bernadotte was arrested without hesitation. The trial was swift, and the verdict was unanimous. Bernadotte was condemned to death by the Swedish Riksdag, and on November 8, 1822, he was taken to the guillotine in Stockholm. The execution marked the end of an era for Bernadotte, who had once been a powerful military leader and a potential successor to Napoleon. This photograph, from the extensive collection of Mary Evans Picture Library, offers a poignant reminder of the complex political landscape of Europe in the aftermath of the Napoleonic Wars. The image of Bernadotte's arrest underscores the high stakes of political intrigue and the harsh consequences of failed conspiracies.
