EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning print depicts the renowned American artist Benjamin West (1738-1820). Born in Pennsylvania, West is considered one of the most important figures in the history of American art. He was a leading figure in the London art world during the late 18th century and is best known for his history paintings, which often depicted scenes from classical mythology and biblical stories. West's artistic talent was evident from an early age. He began his training as an apprentice to a local painter in Pennsylvania before traveling to Europe to study under some of the greatest artists of the time. In London, he became a member of the Royal Academy and was appointed as the official historian painter to King George III. This print captures West in the prime of his career, with a serious expression and a brush in hand. He is dressed in the formal attire of a successful artist, with a crimson robe draped over his shoulders and a white wig adorning his head. The background of the print is filled with scenes from some of West's most famous works, including "The Death of General Wolfe" and "The Oath of the Horatii." West's influence on American art was profound. He helped establish the reputation of American artists on the international stage and paved the way for future generations of artists to follow in his footsteps. This print serves as a testament to West's enduring legacy and his place in the annals of art history.
