EDITORS COMMENTS
On the Belerophon: Aboard the Bellerophon, at Plymouth, he is the object of curiosity to sightseers who row out into the harbour to catch a glimpse of the defeated emperor. July 1815. This historic photograph captures a poignant moment in time, as the once-mighty Napoleon Bonaparte, the former Emperor of the French, is held captive aboard the British warship HMS Bellerophon. After his final defeat at the Battle of Waterloo, Napoleon was exiled to the remote island of Saint Helena in the South Atlantic Ocean. However, before his departure, he was brought to England to await his journey into exile. The image of Napoleon aboard the Bellerophon, anchored in Plymouth Harbour, became a popular sight for locals and tourists alike. People would row out into the harbour to catch a glimpse of the defeated emperor, their curiosity piqued by the historical significance of the moment. The photograph shows a small boat filled with sightseers, all gazing intently at the ship, their expressions a mix of awe, fascination, and perhaps even a hint of triumph. The Bellerophon, a 74-gun ship of the line, looms large in the background, dwarfing the small boats of the sightseers. The ship's cannons are still visible, a reminder of the military might that had brought Napoleon to his knees. The photograph captures a moment of historical significance, a scene that would have been etched into the memories of those who were there, and a reminder of the events that shaped the course of European history. This photograph is a testament to the enduring power of history, and the human curiosity that drives us to seek out and remember the past. It is a poignant reminder of the complexities of human history, and the ways in which even the most powerful of emperors can be brought low by the forces of history and the will of the people.
