EDITORS COMMENTS
The Battle of St. Euphemia, fought on July 6, 1806, during the Italian Campaign of the Napoleonic Wars, is depicted in this evocative print from the Mary Evans Picture Library. The scene captures the intensity and chaos of the clash between the Anglo-Neapolitan force, led by Sir John Stuart, and the smaller French force under General Jean-Andoche Junot's commander, Reynier. The battle took place near the town of Gaeta in central Italy and was a significant engagement in the larger conflict between the French Empire and the Third Coalition, which included the Kingdom of Naples, Austria, Prussia, and Russia. The Anglo-Neapolitan army, although outnumbered, was determined to hold their ground against the advancing French forces. In the print, we see the Anglo-Neapolitan cavalry charging forward, their sabers raised, while the French infantry retreats in disarray. The smoke from gunpowder fills the air, obscuring the battlefield and adding to the sense of confusion and danger. The print also shows the artillery on both sides, their cannons belching fire and smoke as they unleash their deadly projectiles. The Battle of St. Euphemia was a hard-fought engagement, with both sides suffering heavy losses. In the end, the Anglo-Neapolitan forces were able to repel the French attack, but the victory came at a cost. The battle marked the beginning of the end for the Kingdom of Naples' involvement in the war, as they were forced to make peace with the French in the Treaty of Paris in 1806. This print is a valuable historical record of a pivotal moment in the Italian Campaign of the Napoleonic Wars, providing a glimpse into the raw emotion and intensity of battle. It is a reminder of the sacrifices and struggles that shaped the course of European history.
