EDITORS COMMENTS
This historic photograph captures a momentous gathering at Muswell Manor, Shellbeach, on the Isle of Sheppy, UK, on 4th May 1909. The occasion was the visit of the Founding Pioneers of Aviation, who had come together to witness the pioneering flights of the Wright Brothers, Orville and Wilbur. Standing in the back row from left to right are J.D. Andrews, the owner of Muswell Manor; Oswald Short; Horace Short; Eustace Short; Sir Francis F.K. McClean, smoking a pipe; Griffith Brewer; Frank Hedges Butler; and Dr. W.J.S. Lockyer. In the front row, seated from left to right, are J.TC Moore-Brabazon, Wilbur Wright, Orville Wright, and Hon. Charles Rolls. This assemblage of aviation pioneers represents a significant milestone in the early history of flight. The Wright Brothers had made their first powered flight in 1903, and their groundbreaking invention had captured the imagination of the world.
