This evocative photograph captures the enigmatic figure of Auguste Comte (1798-1857), the French philosopher who is considered the founder of sociology. Taken in the late 1850s, the image reveals a man in the twilight of his life, his once-luxuriant hair now turned silver and thinning at the temples. He wears a dark, high-collared jacket and a crisp white shirt, the folds of his clothing suggesting a certain formality and gravity.
