EDITORS COMMENTS
"Augusta Victoria of Hohenzollern (1872-1966), also known as Augusta of Portugal, was the wife of Manuel II, the last King of the Portuguese Monarchy. Born in Sigmaringen, Germany, Augusta was the daughter of Prince Leopold, Prince of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen, and Princess Antoinette of Austria. In 1886, at the age of 14, she was married to Manuel II, who was 26 years her senior. The couple's marriage was arranged to strengthen the political ties between Portugal and Germany. This stunning photograph, taken in 1890, captures Augusta in her regal beauty, wearing a white blouse with a wide brimmed hat adorned with a black ribbon, reminiscent of the traditional Portuguese "calçado" hat. The image exudes an air of elegance and sophistication, reflecting Augusta's role as the Queen Consort of Portugal. Manuel II and Augusta were married for over 50 years, but their reign was marked by political instability and economic hardship. In 1910, the monarchy was overthrown in the Republican Revolution, and the couple was forced into exile. Augusta and Manuel lived in England for the rest of their lives, but Augusta continued to maintain her connection to Portugal, and was known for her charitable works and support of Portuguese causes. After Manuel's death in 1932, Augusta married Robert Douglas, an English aristocrat, in a private ceremony in 1933. Augusta passed away in 1966, at the age of 94, leaving behind a rich legacy as a devoted wife, a loving mother, and a gracious queen." This photograph is a beautiful reminder of Augusta's time as the Queen of Portugal, and the strength and grace she brought to the role despite the challenges she faced. The image captures a moment in history, and offers a glimpse into the life of a remarkable woman who left a lasting impact on both Portugal and Germany.
