EDITORS COMMENTS
This haunting 18th century engraving depicts the fateful moment of the Assassination of the Duke of Buckingham at Portsmouth on 23 August 1628. George Villiers, 1st Duke of Buckingham, was a favorite of King Charles I and a powerful figure in English politics, but his ambitions and controversial personal life made him many enemies. One of these enemies, John Felton, a disgruntled soldier, took matters into his own hands and confronted the Duke as he disembarked from a ship at Portsmouth Harbour. With a single pistol shot, Felton ended the Duke's life, shocking the court and the nation. The engraving captures the moment of the assassination, with the Duke's shocked attendants and the assassin, Felton, in the act of firing his pistol. The Duke is shown falling to the ground, his red cloak billowing around him, while Felton, dressed in the uniform of a musketeer, stands defiantly, holding the smoking pistol in one hand and a sword in the other. The scene is chaotic, with soldiers and onlookers rushing to the scene, and the Duke's horse rearing up in fear. The assassination of the Duke of Buckingham was a pivotal moment in English history, marking the end of an era of political instability and intrigue. It also highlighted the dangers of favoritism and the potential for violence in the court. The engraving serves as a powerful reminder of this tumultuous period in English history and the human consequences of political power struggles.
