This evocative photograph captures a moment of innocence and joy before the unimaginable tragedy that was to unfold. The image shows Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary and his wife, Sophie, waving cheerfully from the open top of their motorcade as they travel along the Appel Quay in Sarajevo, Bosnia, on 28 June 1914. The couple's visit to the city was meant to celebrate the annexation of Bosnia and Herzegovina to the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The sun shines brightly on the Archduke and his wife, casting long shadows on the cobblestone street. The Archduke, dressed in his military uniform, sits confidently in the passenger seat, while Sophie, looking elegant in a white dress and hat, leans out to engage with the crowds that have gathered to greet them. The scene is one of joviality and celebration, a stark contrast to the violence and chaos that was about to erupt.
