EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the moment of the European Allies' advance on Peking during the Boxer Rebellion in 1900. The Boxer Rebellion was an anti-foreigner uprising that took place in China between 1898 and 1901, named after the Boxers, a secret society that believed they could expel all foreigners from China through martial powers and magical powers. In this image, a large contingent of European soldiers, including French, British, and German troops, are seen marching through the streets of Peking, the imperial capital of China. The soldiers are dressed in their full military regalia, carrying their weapons and flags, as they make their way towards the Forbidden City, the imperial palace complex where the Empress Dowager Cixi resided. The Boxer Rebellion had caused widespread chaos and destruction in China, with the rebels attacking foreigners and their property throughout the country. The European powers, along with Japan and Russia, sent their armies to China to suppress the rebellion and protect their interests. The advance on Peking was a significant turning point in the rebellion, as it marked the beginning of the final assault on the imperial palace. The Empress Dowager Cixi and the imperial family were eventually forced to flee, and the rebellion was brought to an end. This photograph is a powerful reminder of the historical significance of the Boxer Rebellion and the role that Europe played in shaping the political landscape of East Asia in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It also underscores the complex and often tumultuous relationship between China and the Western powers during this period.
