EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative portrait captures the enigmatic 8th Earl of Bridgewater, Francis Henry Egerton (1736-1829), who spent an extraordinary 30 years of his life in Paris without learning the local language. Born in England, Egerton was the eldest son of the 7th Earl and heir to the vast Bridgewater Estate. In 1756, he moved to Paris, where he lived a secluded life, dining with his beloved dogs rather than human company. His daily routine was simple yet luxurious - he wore a new pair of shoes every day and enjoyed the finest cuisine, all while surrounded by his extensive collection of art and antiques. Despite his long-term residency, Egerton never felt the need to learn French, preferring to communicate with his servants and acquaintances through gestures and the help of interpreters. His eccentricities earned him a reputation as a curious character among the Parisian elite. This portrait, taken in the late 18th century, captures the Earl's distinctive appearance - his piercing gaze, well-groomed whiskers, and elegant attire. The painting's rich colors and intricate details evoke the opulence and grandeur of the era, making it a captivating glimpse into the life of this remarkable and enigmatic nobleman.
