EDITORS COMMENTS
In the heart of Portugal, in the small village of Fatima, the lives of three young shepherd children - Lucia dos Santos, Francisco Marto, and Jacinta Marto - were forever changed by an extraordinary series of events in 1917. This evocative photograph captures the solemn and innocent faces of the visionaries, who at the tender ages of 10, 9, and 7, reported witnessing apparitions of the Virgin Mary. The first apparition occurred on May 13, 1917, and continued until October 13 of that year. During these appearances, the Virgin Mary revealed prophetic messages and performed miracles, including the famous "Miracle of the Sun," which was witnessed by an estimated 70,000 people. The children's accounts of their experiences were met with skepticism and persecution from local authorities, who saw their visions as a threat to the established religious order. Lucia, Francisco, and Jacinta were taken into custody and subjected to harsh conditions, but their faith remained unwavering. This photograph, taken likely in the years following the apparitions, shows the three children standing together, their expressions reflecting the weight of their experiences. Lucia, the eldest and the only one who continued to receive messages from the Virgin Mary throughout her life, is seen in the center, with Francisco and Jacinta on either side. Their faces bear the marks of their trials, but their eyes shine with a deep, unshakable faith. The vision of Fatima is now considered one of the most significant religious events of the 20th century, and the lives of the three shepherd children have become an inspiration to millions around the world. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of their remarkable story and the profound impact of their experiences.
