EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking image captures the moment of historical significance when Henry IV of England was crowned at Westminster Abbey on March 13, 1399. Henry, the first monarch of the House of Lancaster, ascended to the throne following the death of his predecessor, Richard II, in September 1399. His election was not without controversy, as he had been exiled for several years due to his opposition to Richard's rule. The scene depicted in the print shows Henry IV being crowned by the Archbishop of Canterbury, Thomas Arundel, surrounded by the nobility of the realm. Henry wears the Imperial Crown, a symbol of royal power, and holds the Scepter and Orb in his hands. The richly decorated robes and regalia of the nobles add to the grandeur of the occasion. The customary coronation procession from London to Westminster, which had been a significant event in English history since the time of King Edward the Confessor, was marked by the granting of various privileges and pardons to the people of London. This tradition continued with Henry IV's coronation, further solidifying his position as the legitimate ruler of England. The image is a testament to the importance of the coronation ceremony in English history and the symbolic transfer of power from one monarch to another. It also highlights the significance of Westminster Abbey as a site of royal power and the role of the Church in the coronation process. The intricate details of the robes, the solemn expressions of the nobles, and the grandeur of the setting all contribute to the sense of history and tradition that this image evokes.
