EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from the Liszt Collection showcases the intriguing blend of art and history found in Egypte et Nubie. Taken by Felix Teynard, a renowned French photographer, between 1851 and 1852, this image captures two Sphinxes with distinct heads at Point Y in Karnak (Thebes). Measuring 23.8 x 31.1 cm, this salted paper print was created using a calotype negative technique, highlighting Teynard's mastery of his craft. The composition is both striking and thought-provoking as it features one Sphinx with a human head and another with a ram head. These enigmatic creatures have long fascinated scholars and historians due to their symbolic significance in ancient Egyptian mythology. The juxtaposition of the human-headed Sphinx representing intelligence and wisdom alongside the ram-headed Sphinx symbolizing fertility adds depth to this artwork. Teynard's meticulous attention to detail is evident in every aspect of this photograph - from the intricate carvings on the sphinxes' bodies to the grandeur of their surroundings at Karnak. The sizeable dimensions of both the image itself (38 x 50 cm) and its matting (50.8 x 61 cm) further emphasize its impact when displayed. This remarkable piece invites viewers into an exploration of Egypte et Nubie's most fascinating sites and monuments for studying art and history. It serves as a testament to Teynard's skill as well as Goupil et Cie's
