The image is divided into ten distinct scenes, each capturing a momentous event during this daring ascent. In the first scene, we witness our adventurous group rising promptly at five o'clock in the morning, brimming with enthusiasm for their mountain expedition. Their spirits remain high as they set out towards Ben Macdhui. Having acquired excellent appetites along the way, scene two shows our intrepid climbers indulging in a hearty breakfast amidst Glen Derry's picturesque surroundings. Energized and ready to conquer nature's challenges, they continue their ascent. Scene three introduces an unexpected twist as one of our party members triumphantly catches "only a nippy" showcasing their resilience and determination despite minor setbacks. However, rain soon begins to fall in scene four, forcing them to seek shelter behind a sturdy stone. Undeterred by adverse weather conditions, scene six reveals our adventurers ascending between Ben Main and Cairngorm on the Glen Dee side. Although accompanied by boisterous winds that test their resolve, they press forward undaunted. Finally reaching the summit of Ben Macdhui in scene eight brings both disappointment and consolation. While greeted with an obscured view due to unfavorable conditions, they find solace through heartfelt toasts shared amongst themselves - except for one dissenting voice: the Blue-Ribbonite who had overindulged himself with ginger beer throughout their journey. Regaining level ground after completing their thirty-five-mile tramp is depicted in scene nine; exhaustion mixed with satisfaction etched across their faces. As night falls and memories settle within them like battle scars fought throughout the day (scene ten), this remarkable engraving immortalizes not only an extraordinary feat but also captures elements of Victorian culture and illustrative technique that make it truly timeless.
