EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the impressive lattice framework of the BEA aircraft servicing hangar at Heathrow Airport in Greater London. The metal core of the roof structure is depicted, resting on supporting trestles during its construction. In October 1969, Laing's Industrial Engineering Branch proudly announced their contract for constructing this state-of-the-art hangar for British European Airways. This marked their second major project at Heathrow, following the successful completion of the BEA and BOAC cargo terminal. Designed to accommodate both new airbus jets and existing aircraft, this hangar was a testament to modern engineering. The construction process involved prefabrication and assembly techniques, with the roof being constructed on the ground before being raised by hydraulic jacks. Over a span of eight days in November 1970, an astonishing 3,200 tonnes of steel and services were lifted an impressive height of 20.5 meters. The image captures not only the grandeur of this large building but also highlights the dedication and skill exhibited by workmen on-site during its construction phase. The presence of cranes adds to the sense of scale and complexity involved in such a monumental project. This photograph from A© Historic England Archive offers us a glimpse into history as it documents one remarkable achievement in architectural innovation within Heathrow Airport's bustling grounds during the vibrant era that was the 1970s.
