Metal Prints from Historic England
Oddingley Dovecote OP08634
Dovecote, Oddingley, Worcestershire, 14 May 1894. Percy Thomas Deakin (c1864-1927), platinum print. Percy Deakin was a keen recorder of historic buildings and made meticulous notes, writing on the reverse of his mounts the photographic technique he had used and the date the photograph was taken. The Oddingley dovecote, built around 1600, had become dilapidated by 1930 and was later demolished. Deakins view therefore has an added significance, but the photograph attracts us as much for the figures of the woman and child in the foreground as for the historic dovecote in its picturesque setting

EDITORS COMMENTS
This platinum print by Percy Thomas Deakin takes us back to the picturesque village of Oddingley in Worcestershire, on a sunny day in May 1894. The focus of the photograph is undoubtedly the historic dovecote, built around 1600, which stands proudly against the backdrop of a serene countryside. Its dilapidated state by 1930 and eventual demolition only adds to its significance captured through Deakin's lens. However, what truly draws our attention are the figures of a woman and child in the foreground. Their presence injects life into this otherwise still image, giving us a glimpse into rural England during Victorian times. The woman's attire suggests she may be from a working-class background, while her child clings onto her skirt with an air of innocence and curiosity. Deakin was known for his meticulous documentation of historic buildings, often noting down details about his photographic techniques and dates on the reverse side of his mounts. This dedication to preserving history shines through in this particular print. As we admire this print today, it serves as more than just an archival record; it transports us back in time to witness both architectural heritage and human connection. It reminds us that even amidst grand structures from centuries past, it is often the everyday people who add depth and meaning to our shared history.
