Operation Rich Man JLP01_08_062441a

COVENTRY CATHEDRAL, PRIORY STREET, COVENTRY. Looking up from the ruins of the old Coventry Cathedral towards a RAF Belvedere helicopter lowering the 80ft bronze spire on to the roof of the new cathedral.
The photograph was taken during Operation Rich Man a joint project involving Royal Air Force staff and Laing staff. This involved a RAF Belvedere helicopter hoisting in to place the 80ft bronze spire on to the new cathedral. The part of the operation to lower the 1/2 ton cross that sits on top of the spire had to be postponed due to windy conditions

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a momentous event in the history of Coventry Cathedral. The image showcases the ruins of the old cathedral, still bearing witness to the devastating effects of World War II, while simultaneously displaying hope and progress with the construction of its new counterpart. Operation Rich Man, a collaborative effort between Royal Air Force (RAF) staff and Laing staff, is depicted here in all its glory. A RAF Belvedere helicopter gracefully hovers above the ruins, carefully lowering an impressive 80ft bronze spire onto the roof of the new cathedral. This joint project symbolizes resilience and unity as both military and civilian forces come together to rebuild this iconic place of worship. However, nature's unpredictable temperament intervenes momentarily as windy conditions force a postponement in lowering the 1/2 ton cross that crowns the spire. Nevertheless, this temporary setback only adds to the anticipation surrounding this monumental achievement. The photograph not only highlights architectural marvels but also serves as a testament to human determination and collaboration amidst adversity. It transports us back to Coventry in the 1960s when aircraft were used for more than just warfare; they became instruments for reconstruction and renewal. Preserved by Historic England Archive, this remarkable image invites us to reflect on our ability to rise from destruction and create something beautiful out of chaos – reminding us that even amidst ruins, there is always room for hope and transformation.
