William Jennings Bryan, American politician, 1900. Bryan (1860-1925) was three times the Democratic Partys nominee for President of the United States. He was defeated in the 1896 and 1900 elections by William McKinley, and in 1908 lost to William Howard Taft. He was appointed Secretary of State in Woodrow Wilsons administration in 1913, but resigned two years later over the Presidents handling of the sinking of the Lusitania.
