Vishnu and Lakshmi Seated on a Lotus Blossom, early 1800s. Creator: Unknown

Vishnu and Lakshmi Seated on a Lotus Blossom, early 1800s. Shown with full face forward in all white, Vishnu, the four-armed deity, appears to be a statue, crowned and holding only a manuscript. At the bottom are offerings of flowers, incense, oil lamps, and jeweled cups of pure water or liquor. His lotus pedestal seems to have come alive with the addition of the canopy of petals, seemingly dropped from the heavens to form a private, enclosed space for lovers. Vishnus consort, Lakshmi, identified by the lotus flower behind their heads, has manifested as a red goddess, and embraces him. Such an image shows how consecrated sculptures hold the presence of god

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Vishnu and Lakshmi Seated on a Lotus Blossom" transports us to the early 1800s, where an unknown creator skillfully captured the divine essence of Vishnu and Lakshmi. The image showcases Vishnu, the four-armed deity, seated majestically on a lotus blossom. Cloaked in pure white, he appears almost lifelike as if carved from stone. Crowned and holding a manuscript, his serene expression exudes wisdom and tranquility. Beneath him lie offerings of vibrant flowers, fragrant incense sticks, flickering oil lamps, and jeweled cups filled with pristine water or liquor. These gifts symbolize devotion and reverence towards the gods. The lotus pedestal upon which Vishnu sits seems to have transformed into an enchanting canopy of petals that encloses them both like a private sanctuary for lovers. Behind their heads emerges a lotus flower signifying Lakshmi's presence as she embraces her beloved consort passionately. This exquisite painting beautifully demonstrates how consecrated sculptures hold the divine energy within them. Crafted using gum tempera and gold on paper by artists hailing from Himachal Pradesh in Northern India during the reign of Pahari Kingdom of Kangra. Preserved at The Cleveland Museum of Art under Heritage Art/Heritage Images' care, this artwork serves as a testament to India's rich cultural heritage and religious traditions. It invites viewers to immerse themselves in its ethereal beauty
