Sir John Bowring, Governor of Hong-Kong - from a photograph by Maull and Polyblank, 1860. Creator: Unknown

Sir John Bowring, Governor of Hong-Kong - from a photograph by Maull and Polyblank, 1860. In the latter part of 1853 he was promoted to the post of Superintendent of Trade in China and Plenipotentiary to that empire, and in 1854 was appointed Governor of Hong-Kong, when he received the honour of knighthood...The Chinese Government, from the very first, had shown every disposition to recede from the terms of the treaty formed with them by the late Sir H. Pottinger, in 1842, and steadily refused to give Sir J. Bowring an official reception as her Majesty's representative. This forced the Plenipotentiary to take strong measures, which were fully indorsed by Lord Elgin, who was sent out in 1857 on a special mission to the Court of Pekin - thus reaping the harvest of which Sir J. Bowring had sown the seeds, and throwing open to British commerce and enterprise the trade not only of China but also Japan'. From "Illustrated London News", 1860

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken by Maull and Polyblank in 1860, captures Sir John Bowring in the prime of his career as the Governor of Hong Kong. Sir John's political journey began in the late 1850s when he was appointed as the Superintendent of Trade in China and Plenipotentiary to the Chinese Empire. In 1854, he was further honored with the position of Governor of Hong Kong, and at the same time, he was knighted by Queen Victoria. The Chinese government, however, was reluctant to acknowledge Sir John as Her Majesty's representative, leading to a tense standoff. Despite this, Sir John remained steadfast and took decisive actions, which were later endorsed by Lord Elgin, who was sent to Beijing on a special mission in 1857. Sir John's efforts paved the way for British commerce and enterprise in China, and eventually, Japan as well. This photograph is a testament to Sir John Bowring's resilience and diplomatic prowess during a pivotal period in British-Chinese relations. The exact creator of this photograph remains unknown, but it was first published in the Illustrated London News in 1860.
