EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning folio from a 19th century Ramayana manuscript, depicting the Siege of Lanka, is a testament to the rich artistic heritage of South East Asia. The Adventures of Rama, an epic Hindu text, recounts the story of Prince Rama's quest to rescue his wife Sita from the clutches of the demon king Ravana. In this scene, Rama's brother Lakshmana and the monkey god Hanuman lead an army of monkeys and bears in attacking Ravana's citadel. The opaque watercolor, gold and silver on paper illustration showcases the intricate details of the siege. The fortress, surrounded by a moat and high walls, is under relentless attack from the armed forces. Arrows fly through the air, setting buildings ablaze as the defenders put up a fierce resistance. Rama, mounted on his chariot, surveys the scene, while Jambavan, the king of the bears, and Sugriva, the king of the monkeys, lead their troops from the forefront. The folio is believed to have originated from the Kangra region of Himachal Pradesh, India, and is now part of the collection at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. The intricate details and vibrant colors bring the epic tale to life, transporting us to a time and place far removed from our own. The Siege of Lanka is not only a work of art but also a strategic masterpiece, showcasing the planning and execution of a military attack in the context of Hindu mythology.
