Self-Portrait in Painting Studio, c. 1843. Creator: Camille Dolard (French, 1810-1884)

Self-Portrait in Painting Studio, c. 1843. Many of the best early photographers were artists who put their training in figural arrangement, light and shadow, and composition to good use in the new medium. Dolard, a portrait painter, may have offered photographs to prospective clients of lesser means. In this image, possibly made as an advertisement for his studio, he identifies himself as a painter, surrounded by the tools of the trade. The coat and the hookah suggest an interest in orientalism, a fashion that occupied many mid-19th-century artists. A remarkable technical achievement, this whole-plate image required Dolard to remain motionless for well over a minute, at least 30 times longer than the exposure for the smaller plates in the case below

EDITORS COMMENTS
This self-portrait, captured by the talented French artist Camille Dolard in his painting studio around 1843, showcases the fusion of artistry and early photography. As one of the pioneering photographers who possessed a background in fine arts, Dolard skillfully utilized his training in figural arrangement, light and shadow, and composition to create this remarkable image. It is believed that Dolard may have used photographs as a means to reach out to potential clients with limited financial resources. In this particular photograph, which could have served as an advertisement for his studio, he proudly presents himself amidst the tools of his trade – brushes, canvases, and easels. Notably, he also incorporates elements of orientalism into the composition through his coat and hookah pipe; a popular trend among artists during the mid-19th century. Technically impressive for its time period, this whole-plate daguerreotype required Dolard's unwavering stillness for well over a minute – significantly longer than exposures needed for smaller plates commonly used at that time. This achievement highlights both Dolard's dedication to perfecting his craft and the advancements made within early photography. Preserved by Heritage Art/Heritage Images at The Cleveland Museum of Art (not affiliated with any commercial company), this print serves as a testament to Dolard's artistic prowess and contribution to the evolving world of photography during the 19th century.
