Scales, c. 1938

EDITORS COMMENTS
by Harry Grossen captures the essence of rural life in 20th century America. This close-up pencil drawing showcases a timeless concept - balance. With meticulous detail and skillful use of watercolor and graphite on paper, Grossen brings to life an old-fashioned set of scales. The rustic charm of this artwork transports us back to a simpler time, where weights and measures played a crucial role in everyday country living. The artist's attention to detail is evident in every stroke, as he masterfully depicts the worn-out hooks and delicate lines that make up the structure of the scales. Displayed at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D. C. , this piece from the Index of American Design reflects not only artistic talent but also cultural heritage. It serves as a reminder of how essential these tools were for farmers and merchants alike during the thirties. As we admire "Scales" we are reminded that art has always been intertwined with daily life. Through his skilled craftsmanship, Grossen invites us to appreciate both beauty and functionality within ordinary objects. This print allows us to glimpse into a bygone era while appreciating its relevance even today. Whether you have an affinity for history or simply enjoy fine artistry, "Scales" offers an engaging visual experience that transcends time and place
