The Resurrection of Christ, c. 1562. Creator: Philip Galle (Flemish, 1537-1612)
The Resurrection of Christ, c. 1562. After Christs crucifixion and burial, he rose from his tomb to dwell on earth for 40 days before ascending to heaven. According to the Gospel account of Matthew, as depicted here, the soldiers guarding the tomb fell asleep and the tomb opened miraculously. Christ appears above, triumphant. For Christians, the resurrection of Christ is essential for the doctrine of salvation and the hope of deliverance from the power and effect of sin. The promise of salvation, of a new day, is symbolized by the rising sun, to which Christ points, and Christs halo, which resembles a sun. Galles engraving is based on a monochrome wash drawing by Bruegel. The print, which is the same size as the drawing, but with the image reversed, even retains the frame

The Resurrection of Christ, c. 1562
EDITORS COMMENTS
is a powerful print that captures the pivotal moment in Christian belief when Jesus rises from his tomb after crucifixion and burial. Created by Philip Galle, a Flemish artist known for his engravings, this artwork beautifully depicts the miraculous event as described in the Gospel of Matthew. In this scene, we see soldiers guarding the tomb who have fallen asleep while Christ emerges triumphantly from the opened tomb above them. The resurrection of Christ holds great significance for Christians as it represents salvation and hope for deliverance from sin's power and effects. Galle's engraving is based on a monochrome wash drawing by Pieter Bruegel, another renowned Flemish artist. The print retains the same size as the original drawing but with a reversed image. Notably, even the frame has been faithfully reproduced. Symbolically, Galle portrays Christ pointing towards the rising sun to represent a new day and promise of salvation. His halo resembles a sun, further emphasizing this symbolism. This remarkable piece is part of The Cleveland Museum of Art's collection and showcases Galle's exceptional skill in capturing religious themes through intricate engravings. As viewers engage with "The Resurrection of Christ" they are invited to reflect on their own faith and find inspiration in this profound moment that forms an essential pillar of Christian doctrine.
