Born in Clermont-Ferrand, France in 1885, Lufbery moved to the United States at a young age. When the Great War erupted, he bravely joined the French Foreign Legion before transferring to the French Air Service. As America entered the war, Lufbery became part of the US Air Service. With his exceptional skills and unwavering determination, Lufbery achieved his first aerial victory over Verdun on July 30th, 1916. Throughout his illustrious career as a fighter pilot, he went on to claim an impressive tally of 17 victories. Tragically, his life was cut short when he met his untimely demise by falling or possibly jumping from his burning plane on May 19th, 1918. In this monochrome portrait captured by an unknown creator from Heritage Images collection titled "Raoul Lufbery" we see a stoic and resolute man donning military uniform with pride.
