Neath Abbey, c. 1840s. Creator: Peter De Wint (British, 1784-1849)
Neath Abbey, c. 1840s. Among the key artists of the golden age of watercolour painting in England, DeWint was known for his panoramic views of spacious, seemingly commonplace landscapes rendered in broad washes of earth-tone hues. This drawing depicts the ruins of Neath Abbey, a Cistercian monastery established in the early years of the 12th century in south Wales. From the Tudor period there was industrial activity around the abbey, and by the time DeWint was painting the priory, the Neath Abbey Iron Company had engulfed the environs of the church with copper smelting and manufacture. DeWint chose to omit evidence of the transformation of the area and its role in the Industrial Revolution

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases "Neath Abbey" in the 1840s, a masterpiece created by Peter De Wint. As one of the prominent artists during England's golden age of watercolour painting, DeWint was renowned for his ability to capture vast landscapes with an air of simplicity using earth-tone hues. In this particular drawing, he beautifully portrays the ruins of Neath Abbey, a Cistercian monastery established in the early 12th century in south Wales. During the Tudor period, industrial activity began to surround the abbey, and by the time DeWint painted it, copper smelting and manufacturing had transformed its surroundings due to the Neath Abbey Iron Company. However, interestingly enough, DeWint deliberately chose not to include any evidence of this transformation or its role in driving forward the Industrial Revolution. The artwork itself is a watercolour piece with traces of graphite underdrawing and scratch away techniques employed by DeWint. It is housed at The Cleveland Museum of Art and represents British heritage art at its finest. This print from Heritage Art/Heritage Images allows us to appreciate both DeWint's artistic prowess as well as glimpse into a significant historical site that has witnessed centuries of change while remaining timeless in its beauty.
