EDITORS COMMENTS
John Dana's captivating watercolor, graphite, and colored pencil rendering titled "Mug, 1935/1942" showcases the timeless beauty and artistry of American glassmaking during the 1930s and 1940s. This exquisite work of art is a testament to the rich heritage of decorative arts in the United States. The mug, depicted in the image, is a prime example of functional art, its form and design harmoniously blending aesthetics and utility. The mug's robust, brown body is contrasted by the vibrant green handle, a striking visual element that adds to its allure. The mug's simple yet elegant shape is reminiscent of the art deco and art moderne design sensibilities of the era. John Dana's masterful use of color and line in this work brings the mug to life, allowing us to appreciate its intricate details and textures. The watercolor and graphite medium perfectly capture the glass's translucent quality, while the colored pencil adds depth and dimension to the handle and other textured areas. This artwork is a significant addition to any collection focusing on the Index of American Design, 20th-century American art, or the history of glassmaking. The mug's presence in the image serves as a reminder of the rich cultural heritage and artistic innovation that emerged from American factories and glassworks during the 1930s and 1940s. The National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., is proud to house this period piece in its esteemed collection, where it continues to inspire and educate visitors about the importance of functional art and the role it plays in our daily lives.
