A Midsummer Night's Dream (Shakespeare, Act 4, Scene 1), November, 1857

EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating print that transports us back to the enchanting world of Shakespearean literature. Created by Samuel Cousins in the 19th century, this mezzotint engraving with mixed method on chine collé beautifully captures the essence of one of Shakespeare's most beloved plays. In this scene, we find ourselves amidst a mythical realm where fairies and mythical creatures coexist. The central figure is Bottom, portrayed as an ass after being transformed by Puck's mischievous magic. Edwin Henry Landseer's intricate details bring out the complexity of Bottom's character while maintaining a sense of whimsy. Surrounded by rabbits and other animals who seem both amused and bewildered by his transformation, Bottom stands as a symbol of folly and human nature itself. The delicate lines and shading in Cousins' engraving highlight every nuance of expression on each creature’s face. This print not only pays homage to Shakespeare but also showcases the artistic talent prevalent during Britain's cultural renaissance in the 19th century. It serves as a testament to Sir Edwin Henry Landseer’s skillful interpretation of mythological creatures within his artwork. Displayed at the Metropolitan Museum of Art today, this second state edition from Cousins' collection continues to captivate viewers with its timeless beauty. A true masterpiece that merges literature with visual artistry, it invites us into a world where reality blurs with fantasy – reminding us that even within our own lives there lies an element of magic waiting to be discovered.
