EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Lord Howard of Effingham, captured in the year 1600 by the talented artist Thomas Cockson. The portrait depicts Charles Howard, 1st Earl of Nottingham (1536-1624), who held the esteemed title of Lord High Admiral from 1585 until his retirement in 1619. As a first cousin to Queen Elizabeth I, he played a crucial role in defending England against the Spanish Armada and commanded the British fleet during this historic battle. In this remarkable image, we see Lord Howard standing proudly amidst an outdoor setting with the coastal town of Cadizin visible in the background. He exudes authority and power as he holds onto his horse's reins while dressed impeccably in period attire. The monochrome effect adds depth and intensity to this striking portrayal. The significance of Lord Howard's contributions is further highlighted by his appointment as Earl of Nottingham in 1597 after successfully leading an Anglo-Dutch expedition to Cadiz. His loyalty extended beyond Queen Elizabeth I's reign, serving James I as well. This particular print was featured in The Connoisseur Volume XCI edited by F. Gordon Roe back in London during 1933. It serves as a testament to both historical importance and artistic excellence, capturing an influential figure from England's past for generations to appreciate and admire.
