EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Leopold II, King of Belgium from 1865 to 1909, captured in a regal portrait by the talented artist Pierre Tossyn. The image depicts Leopold II wearing the distinguished insignia of the Order of the Golden Fleece, symbolizing his prestigious position as monarch. However, behind this seemingly majestic facade lies a dark chapter in history. Leopold II is infamous for founding the Congo Free State in 1885 with ulterior motives of exploiting its abundant rubber, ivory, and mineral resources. This led to an era of brutal exploitation and suffering for the local population under their colonial rulers. The atrocities committed during Leopold's reign resulted in an estimated death toll ranging from 5 to 15 million people. It was not until news about these horrific conditions reached the outside world in 1905 that international pressure forced Leopold to transfer control over Congo's administration to the Belgian state. This thought-provoking print serves as a reminder of both power and abuse within colonialism. It encapsulates a complex historical figure whose actions left an indelible mark on Africa's history. As we reflect upon this portrait, it is essential to acknowledge and learn from past injustices while striving towards a more equitable future for all nations involved.
