Landscape, 1798. Creator: Chikuseki Nagamachi (Japanese, 1747-1806)

Landscape, 1798. The Nanga, or " Southern School" painters of 17th- and 18th-century Japan were greatly influenced by Chinese culture. The subjects and styles of their work reflected the contemporary Japanese taste for imported Chinese objects and learning. A common practice among Nanga painters was the exchange of small paintings and calligraphies. They also celebrated special gatherings of artist-friends by producing individual sheets that were then gathered together in albums. The sheets shown here were part of such a gathering

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a mesmerizing landscape painting created in 1798 by Chikuseki Nagamachi, a renowned Japanese artist from the Edo period. The artwork belongs to the Nanga, or "Southern School" painters, who were heavily influenced by Chinese culture during the 17th and 18th centuries. This influence is evident in their choice of subjects and artistic styles, which catered to Japan's growing fascination with imported Chinese objects and knowledge. The Nanga painters had a unique tradition of exchanging small paintings and calligraphies among themselves.
