King and knight, late 12th century, (1843). Artist: Henry Shaw
King and knight, late 12th century, (1843). The king wears a long dalmatica (tunic) ornamented with fleur de lys, and mantle thrown back to show his jewelled collar and girdle. The knight seems to be a crusader in coat and hood of mail with a silk surcoat ornamented with crosses. The surcoat came from the east and helped stop armour getting too hot from suns rays. His legs are clad in chausses, with spurs. Illustration from Dresses and Decorations of the Middle Ages from the Seventh to the Seventeenth Centuries, by Henry Shaw, (London, 1843)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photo print, titled "King and knight, late 12th century" and created by Henry Shaw in 1843, offers a vivid glimpse into the medieval world. The regal king stands tall, adorned in a magnificent long tunic known as a dalmatica. Embellished with fleur de lys motifs, his attire exudes elegance and power. His mantle is thrown back to reveal a jeweled collar and girdle that further enhance his majestic presence. Beside him stands the valiant knight, possibly a crusader returning from distant lands. Clad in chain mail armor covered by a silk surcoat adorned with crosses, he epitomizes bravery and devotion to Christianity. The surcoat's purpose becomes apparent - it protects him from the scorching sun rays while traversing foreign territories during holy wars. The knight's legs are encased in chausses accompanied by spurs, symbolizing his readiness for battle on horseback. With sword at his side and banner held high displaying religious insignia, he embodies the spirit of chivalry. Henry Shaw masterfully captures this medieval scene through intricate details that transport us back to an era of knights and kings. This illustration originates from Shaw's renowned work "Dresses and Decorations of the Middle Ages" published in London during 1843. As we gaze upon this print today, we can appreciate its historical significance as well as marvel at the artistry behind it – truly an exquisite depiction of royalty intertwined with warfare during the enchanting period of the twelfth century.
