EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases King George III, a significant figure in British history. Born as George William Frederick in 1738, he ascended to the throne of Great Britain and Ireland in 1760 and later became the ruler of the United Kingdom until his passing in 1820. However, behind his regal appearance lies a tragic tale of mental illness. King George III suffered from a medical condition that affected his mental faculties, resulting in periods of madness. This condition was later identified as porphyria, which greatly impacted his ability to govern effectively. As a result, his son, who would become known as George IV, acted as Regent during some parts of his reign. In this portrait captured by an unknown creator and printed on a cigarette card by The Print Collector (not the company), King George III is depicted wearing fur adorned with ermine. His piercing gaze reflects both strength and vulnerability while hinting at the turmoil within him. This image serves not only as a visual representation of royalty but also acts as a reminder that even those who hold immense power can be plagued by personal struggles. It offers us insight into the complexities faced by individuals throughout history and encourages us to approach historical figures with empathy and understanding rather than simply viewing them through their titles or accomplishments.
