Jupiter, firedog, late 16th century, (1881). Etching of a bronze firedog in the form of the Roman god Jupiter, one of a pair made c1570-1600 by Giuseppe de Levis in Verona, Italy. Firedogs were used to support logs burning in an open fire. From " The South Kensington Museum", a book of engraved illustrations, with descriptions, of the works of art in the collection of the Victoria & Albert Museum in London (formerly known as the South Kensington Museum).
